Why 2018 Will Be The Best Year Ever For… Women's Movement

The ‘Time’s Up’ movement dominated the 75th Golden Globes as stars wore black to walk the red carpet.

Celebrities such as Dakota Johnson, Kerry Washington, Chris Hemsworth among many others all wore black to the annual Golden Globes in solidarity for the mission of anti-sexual harassment group Time’s Up.

The organisation, which debuted itself on January 1, formed after allegations against former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein came to light in a story by The New York Times in October.

Dozens of celebrities including America Ferrera, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon all signed Time’s Up open letter that was published in The New York Times on January 1. Stars also shared their support posting Time’s Up mission statement on their social media accounts.

In December, it was revealed that celebrities would be wearing black to the Globes to protest sexual harassment in the workplace. But it was the letter, signed by more than 300 female celebrities, which showed that the black was symbolic of something much bigger.

Throughout the show, celebrities made sure to address the issue of gender inequality within Hollywood.

The host of the night, Seth Meyers, cracked jokes about the Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey scandals in his opening monologue. “Marijuana is finally allowed, and sexual harassment finally isn’t.”

The night ended with Oprah Winfrey’s speech where she spoke out against sexual misconduct, promoted female empowerment and about Time’s Up Legal Defense fund. Winfrey received three standing ovations.
