Summer Walker takes us back to the Last Day of Summer

Label: LVRN/Interscope Records

The Lowdown: Let’s cut to the chase: Summer Walker is a woman of many talents. Hailed for giving the girls something to jam to and the guys' something to think about, Atlanta-based singer-songwriter-producer Summer Walker has done the unachievable relating to both sexes. She popped up on the scene over the season that bears her name and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere soon.

Her debut album Last Day of Summer comes after teasing fans with a couple of songs prior and brings a plethora of slow seductive jams about love, sex, femininity and womanhood. She’s already bagged a verse from Drake on a remix of her track Girls Need Love.

The Good: Summer’s seductive voice takes us on a short trip away in the clouds. Her raw, soulful tones sung over a guitar-centric rhythm flows like water through the album.

The soothing beat of CPR and Deep carry a slightly edgier sound than the rest of the album. The slow steady rhythm livens in Baby as hints of jazz are incorporated. Summer’s sultry vocals in the beat-heavy track I’m There has us hypnotised. Slowing down the pace in the moody Prayed Up, the slight grittiness in her voice brings out the vulnerability in her track Shame.

Drake’s verse on Girls Need Love compliments the candidness in Summer’s voice, as she states “girls need love too”.

The Bad: There are 13 songs on Last Day of Summer and it stands at just 32 minutes long. All of which are perfect but has fans crying out for more.

The Verdict: As a first album, Summer Walker has set the standard extremely high. Her perfectly-curated album takes us back to, indeed, those last days of summer when the heat has returned for one last day. This album carries a different vibe to what most would expect from an R&B album but the talent is obvious in Summer’s vocal execution and the accompaniment of a few instruments.

Essential Tracks: “Girls Need Love”, “CPR”, and “Just Like Me”.
